Sheila Wellstone was a national champion, organizer, and advocate for ending domestic violence in our communities. The Sheila Wellstone Institute continues her committment to ensure that ending domestic and sexual violence is a national priority. Each year, the Sheila Wellstone Institute has continued Sheila's tradition of an annual event in the Capitol to draw public attention to the issue of sexual and domestic violence.
On Wednesday, October 5th, 2011, more than 150 people attended the annual Sheila Wellstone Awards program. The ceremony was warm and wonderful thanks to Senator Amy Klobuchar and her staff for their commitment to celebrating and continuing Sheila's work. We were also joined by Senator Al Franken, Franni Franken, Senator Tom Harkin, and Chairman Patrick Leahy, who received the Outstanding Elected Official Award for his staunch dedication and leadership on the work to end domestic violence against women and families.
Also awarded at last night's ceremony were Dr. Oliver Williams, Outstanding Individual, and Nan Stoops, the Executive Director of Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, accepting the award for Outstanding Organization. More information and biographies of the winners are below.
We are proud of our award winners and look forward to working together to continue to honor Sheila's legacy. More information and photos from the event will be shared soon!
Please consider making a gift to help support and continue the work of the Sheila Wellstone Institute.
